The Awatoru approach recognises all design disciplines as relevant to business development and promotes their integrated and holistic consideration. These disciplines include, but are not excluded to:

• Spatial Design: Interior / Architecture
• 3 Dimensional Design: Product / Object / Craft / Furniture / Fashion
• 2 Dimensional Design: Graphic / Photography / Illustration
• Virtual Space: Web & virtual environments / spaces.
• Systems design: Processes / infrastructure / organisational
• Strategic: strategy / futures

The approach also advocates that there are potential strengths in developing 3 main points of focus: Collaboration / Applied / Projectised.

Collaboration – not hybridisation:

Awatoru recognises specific educational strengths in each of the target areas – design, business and culture, so rather than dilute this expertise, the approach seeks to provide a collaborative space where each discipline works kanohi ki kanohi – pakahiwi ki pakahiwi (face to face & shoulder to shoulder).

Applied inter-disciplinary research:

The programme is targeted at post-graduate level and focuses on bringing together expertise spanning business, design and culture. This will ensure "real" needs and aspirations are correctly identified to make a "real" impact through research application.

A projectised approach:

The programme uses a project management framework as the basis for undertaking collaborative projects with enterprise partners.
